UMaine's Perspective on the Issues of AIG

The recent news of AIG has been quite a talked about scandal as the top executives have received around $165 million in bonuses. The company took government bailout money to do so.

John Mahon, dean of the University of Maine College of Business, states that now it seems people think that they can get a bonus just for showing up. He also talked about how usually a bonus was awarded for a job well done and not for bad behavior.

In actuality, the bonuses were given out so that employees would not leave the company in hard times. The actions of the company were not lawful and have been looked down upon compared to the normal behavior in most ethical businesses.
